Why Do My Teeth Look Stained and Dull?
Many factors contribute to darkening or discoloration of teeth. Some are related to health and medications, and some are related to lifestyle choices.
- As you age, your teeth naturally appear duller and more yellow than white. Genetically, some people simply have whiter teeth than others. These natural occurrences cannot be changed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about them.
- Coffee, tea, wine, cola, and other fruits and vegetables can stain teeth. The more you eat and drink these beverages and foods the more likely your teeth are to appear stained.
- A huge offender for staining teeth is tobacco. Whether you smoke or chew tobacco, you are contributing to yellow/brown stains on your teeth. Poor dental hygiene exacerbates the effects.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Whitening toothpastes are abrasive and remove stains mechanically on tooth surfaces. They polish the teeth, so not all teeth will respond well and can be damaging to the teeth and gum tissue with misuse. At-home whitening kits generally consist of trays, strips, or rinses. They are used over the course of several days or weeks. If they are provided by our office, the whitening gel is placed in special trays for you to wear for a prescribed amount of time. If worn too long, the gel may irritate your teeth and gums.
In the office, we use whiteners that are much stronger because we are supervising the process. We will apply protection for your gums and cover your teeth with a special whitening gel.
